What 5 Kilograms of Rice Really Means for Needy Families

Five kilograms might not look like much. But for a family facing hunger, 5kg of rice means survival.

On average, 5 kilograms of rice can provide 50 to 60 servings. For a family of five, that can mean up to 10 days of meals, without the anxiety of empty cupboards or deciding who eats a little less.

Rice is more than food. It is stability.

In many of the communities we serve, rice is the foundation of every meal. Over the past 10 years, we delivered 958,032 kilograms of rice across Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. It stretches when combined with lentils or vegetables. It feeds children before school and sustains parents through long days of uncertainty. It is affordable, filling, and culturally familiar; a simple staple that carries families through difficult seasons.

During Ramadan, its meaning deepens.

While many of us prepare abundant iftar tables, millions of families worry about how they will break their fast. A single bag of rice ensures that a mother does not have to water down the last pot. It ensures that children do not go to sleep hungry after fasting for the day. It restores dignity in a month meant for mercy.

When you give rice through Zakat Foundation of America, you are not just donating food; you are delivering reassurance. You are easing the burden of a parent. You are turning a simple grain into comfort, nourishment, and hope. This Ramadan, what seems small in your hands becomes life-sustaining in theirs. And sometimes, the smallest grain carries the greatest reward.

With $5, you can provide five kilograms of rice, bring 60 meals, and offer countless moments of relief.
