Eid al-Adha is a holiday known for its tradition of commemorating the obedience of the Prophets Ibrahim and Ismail, on them be peace. Muslims celebrate it yearly. During Eid al-Adha, Muslims mark the memory of this obedience by sacrificing certain kinds of livestock (a sacrifice called either qurbani or udhiyah) and distributing their fresh meat to the poor in their local and global communities.
The Timing of Eid al-Adha 2025
The Hajj pilgrimage occurs during the Islamic calendar month of Dhul-Hijjah, named after the pilgrimage itself. Exactly when Eid al-Adha falls each year is partially affected by Saudi Arabia’s announcement of the year’s Hajj schedule. This announcement is calculated in advance based on the moon’s orbit around the earth, with Islamic tradition being to sight 12 lunar months’ new crescents immediately after sunset.
While the exact calculation is still too early to determine, based on the fact that the Gregorian calendar is 11 days shorter than the Islamic Hijri calendar, it can be expected that Eid al-Adha 2025 will occur 11 days prior to the date of Eid al-Adha 2024.
This year, Eid al-Adha was celebrated on Sunday, June 16th, 2024, and thus Eid al-Adha 2025 is expected to occur on Wednesday, May 28th, 2025. And God knows best.
