For Muslims, Qurbani (also called Udhiyah) season is a time to remember the importance of sacrifice and sharing our blessings with others.
But what is the significance of Qurbani, and when are Qurbani 2024 and Eid al-Adha 2024 expected to occur this year?
The Importance of Qurbani 2024
We have made the sacrificial camels [and cattle] among the symbols of God, in which there is much good for you. So pronounce the Name of God over them when they are lined up [for sacrifice]” (Surat Al-Hajj, 22:36).
Qurbani season, also known as the 10 Days of Dhul-Hijjah, commemorates the obedience of the Prophet Abraham and his son Ismail and is marked by the Hajj pilgrimage made by capable Muslims at least once in their lifetime.
In the same way that Abraham and Ismail were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for God’s pleasure, Muslims sacrifice specific kinds of livestock (typically a sheep or cow) for Qurbani and distribute its fresh meat to the poor both in their local communities and worldwide. Through the practice of Qurbani, Muslims are reminded of the spiritual duty of helping and nourishing the needy through sincere sacrifice.
Qurbani season is then concluded with the holiday of Eid al-Adha, and the actual practice of the Qurbani sacrifice occurs during the morning of this holiday.
The Timing of Qurbani 2024
Currently, the first full day of Qurbani/Hajj season (or the first of the month of Dhul-Hijjah) is expected to occur on Friday, June 7, 2024, which would also place Eid al-Adha 2024 to be celebrated on the day of Monday, June 17, 2024.
However, exact dates for both Qurbani 2024 and Eid al-Adha 2024 are still dependent on the sighting of the moon of Dhul-Hijjah and the official announcement of the Hajj schedule by Saudi Arabia.
We wish you and your loved ones the best of blessings this Udhiyah-Qurbani season 2024 and hope you are able to maximize your blessings with your prayers and sacrifice.
