NGOsource Partners with Zakat Foundation of America: Reflections on Ramadan

ramadan

We continue our series on philanthropy in and around Syria, in partnership with the Zakat Foundation of America (Zakat Foundation of America), with an overview of Zakat Foundation of America’s work in connection to the month of Ramadan. The following article was contributed by Zakat Foundation of America.

The month of Ramadan is a time to awaken compassion and solidarity with food-insecure and vulnerable people around the world. It is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad. Practicing Muslims who are physically able will fast during the day for Ramadan and break their fast after sunset during Iftar, a meal shared with family and friends to celebrate the gifts of food, faith, and community.

In the humanitarian and development space, Zakat Foundation of America is a leader in enabling donors to celebrate this holy time and give thanks by facilitating food distribution and livelihoods programs to families across the globe. As an organization, we work to promote the charitable tendencies and values of Ramadan to individuals throughout the entire year. Much like the Christmas season for Christians, Ramadan is a time for Muslims to reflect on their blessings and share their good will with communities nearby and afar, regardless of creed, race or ethnic background.

In 2017, Zakat Foundation of America served 8 million individuals during the month of Ramadan by providing food and life essentials, as well as establishing programs for our international and domestic partners. Our goal for 2018 was to reach a new personal record of reaching 10 million individuals with food and resources throughout this special month. Our Ramadan fundraising and donor outreach helps connect American philanthropists to those in need around the globe.
