The conflict that engulfed the Malian people several months ago has been resolved on the political level. Mali recently inaugurated President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and the French ceremoniously ended their military intervention as rebels ceased to threaten the country’s stability. However Mali continues to face a significant humanitarian crisis despite the lack of news coverage.
According to the United Nations, more than 260,000 people have been displaced internally. Last year’s food crisis continues, leaving families across the country, especially displaced families, facing starvation. In recent weeks, Zakat Foundation of America Executive Director, Khalil Demir, traveled to Mali to greet the new president, meet with UN agencies to coordinate long-term relief and development programs, and distribute emergency food packages, essential medicine and gifts for children in the capital, Bamako.
