Zakat Foundation of America Provides Critical Surgical Support to Save Lives at Kuwait Specialty Field Hospital in Gaza, Palestine

Our Medical Treatment Health Assistance program is delivering urgent support for life-saving surgeries at Gaza’s Kuwait Specialty Field Hospital as critical medical needs grow daily.

Since the catastrophic humanitarian crisis unfolded in Gaza in October 2023, the healthcare system across the Gaza Strip has been decimated, with medical personnel under constant threat, nearly all supplies gone, and residents continuing to face accelerating suffering. The World Health Organization paints a morbid image with 94% of hospitals damaged or destroyed, and only 2,000 beds available across the semi-functioning hospitals for a population of 2 million.

Amid this all, Kuwait Specialty Field Hospital, founded originally in Rafah as a charitable facility for those unable to pay for healthcare, is taking on the added pressure of providing medical care to the growing population of displaced people in Al-Mawasi, Khan Younis. With the help of Zakat Foundation of America, the hospital has expanded operations to meet the overwhelming demand with an emergency field hospital.

Daily, dozens of critically injured, mainly from war-related trauma, arrive requiring immediate surgical care. Two operating rooms perform up to 40 surgeries daily, ranging from urology, general surgery, gynecological operations, caesarean sections, pediatric surgery, orthopedics, ear, nose, and throat surgery. About 300 employees work at the hospital, including specialists and general doctors, pharmacists, nurses, paramedics, anesthesia and radiology technicians, in addition to the administrative staff, ambulance drivers, security guards, and cleaning workers. The hospital is equipped with natural birth, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, and television imaging services.

Through the Zakat Foundation of America’s support, the hospital aims to deliver urgent and immediate surgical care without risking lives or causing permanent disability. This requires essential surgical tools, medications, and staff with the goal of not only saving lives but also reducing the strain on the few remaining hospitals in southern Gaza.

The World Health Organization reveals bed occupancy in hospitals across Gaza has reached 80%-95% with an average trauma patient stay averaging 3-8 weeks. The Zakat Foundation of America is helping nourish these patients post-surgery with warm meals and emotional support through our field teams. The reality on the ground is that every delayed operation poses a risk for the potential loss of life, limbs, or critical organs.

Supporting these efforts will help save lives and restore hope for those facing unimaginable hardship. Be the reason a mother survives childbirth, a child walks again, and a father returns home.
