CHICAGO -- October 18, 2017-- Zakat Foundation of America held it’s second “Volunteer Day” drawing over 100 youth who collectively prepared 1000 food packages for hurricane victims in Puerto Rico on Sunday, October 15, 2017.
Last month, Zakat Foundation of America dedicated “Volunteer Day” to the Texas victims of Hurricane Harvey. This month, Zakat Foundation of America volunteers assembled food kits to send to the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
Zakat Foundation of America mobilized its disaster relief team as soon as Zakat Foundation of America saw the devastation that hit Puerto Rico.
We already delivered two shipments of emergency aid to Puerto Rico; now we called the community to come together and help us prepare 1000 food packages for our next shipment. It was a bustling 3 hours of passionate volunteer energy running the most efficient assembly lines I’ve ever seen.” said Outreach Manager Amal Ali.
Volunteers of all ages, but mostly youth, filled the Zakat Foundation of America Unity Center Sunday afternoon to assemble the food packages. The food packages contained rice, cans of tuna, cereal, protein bars, cans of chicken, spaghettios, beans, soup, ramen noodles, paper towels and toilet paper.
I’m here because I wanted to do whatever I could to help my family down in Puerto Rico,” said participant Amnah H.
The event took place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and concluded with an uplifting and inspirational talk from Lena Tleib, Zakat Foundation of America Advertisement and Events Coordinator. Tleib reminded the audience of volunteers about the connections between serving humanity and one’s own personal well-being and spirituality.
I’m here because I want my daughters to always see how great it is to help those in need,” said volunteer Sameria R.
