In partnership with the United Church of Chapel Hill and the Muslim communities of North Carolina, Zakat Foundation of America co-hosted a picnic for refugee families at Chapel Hill.
More than 200 people attended the event, where the food was entirely prepared and cooked by Syrian families. The menu included savory beef and chicken dishes and guests also brought fresh salad and dessert.
The community was so impressed by the cuisine that one of the attendees requested that a Syrian family helps cater her next party.
“This was a very well-organized event,” said Umit Gunes, a visiting scholar at Duke University. “There was a lot of delicious food, and a really fun and friendly environment.”
After the meal, children played at a nearby playground while adults showcased cultural dances from Syria.
