Sacramento's interfaith community holds benefit concert for Turkey, Syria earthquake victims

Leaders from Sacramento's interfaith community came together to host a special benefit concert for earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria. The concert was held at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium Wednesday night.

Al Firdaus Ensemble, a group of musicians from the Andalucía region of Southern Spain, performed at the one-night show. Their music combines influences Turkish, Arabic, and Celtic cultures.

"Our songs are spiritual songs, so giving hope and also faith and patience," said Al Firdaus singer and violinist Ali Keeler. "I lived in Syria, and I have many friends both in Syria and Turkey, so it's very meaningful."

All proceeds from the benefit are going to Zakat Foundation of America. Zakat is providing emergency relief through temporary shelter, food, medical supplies, and hygiene kits for people in areas affected by the quake.

"Every ticket sale, every donation made tonight, will go directly towards the victims," said Basim Elkarra with the Council on American-Islamic Relations. "When the capitol of California shows that we care about what's happening around the world, it sends a message."
