NYN Media has taken the 100 largest nonprofits in New York, by revenue, and broken them down by the numbers. IRS 990 filings published by GuideStar were used for this new weekly series.

In this report, NYN Media counts down from no. 94, The Simons Foundation Inc., followed by The Unity Hospital of Rochester at no. 93 and UNICEF USA, United States Fund for UNICEF at 92.

94. Simons Foundation Inc.

Established in 1994, the Simons Foundation Inc. is a New York-based private charitable organization that specializes in financing projects in “four program areas: mathematics and physical sciences; life sciences; autism research; and education & outreach.” Simons also funds two independent online publications:Quanta Magazine, focused on developments in math, physics, life science, and computer science, and Spectrum, dedicated to autism research. Additionally, the organization runs the Simons Investigators program which provides financial support for scientists to research major questions in their field of study. The Simons Foundation is a member of the White House BRAIN Initiative Alliance as of 2018.

The Unity Hospital of Rochester, officially Unity Hospital, Rochester Regional Health, is a 287-bed community hospital in Greece, New York, a suburb of Rochester. The hospital has been named a Blue Distinction Center by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and earned a Gold Seal of Approval for health care quality from the Joint Commission. In December 2021 as the Omicron variant was surging, Unity Hospital, along with 40 other hospitals in New York, was ordered to pause elective surgeries for at least two weeks due to limited, staffed patient bed capacity, according to New York State’s Department of Health.

92. UNICEF USA, United States Fund for UNICEF

UNICEF USA, officially the United States Fund for UNICEF, is a non-governmental organization created to support the United Nations Children’s Fund and the oldest of the 36 UNICEF National Committees. The organization also runs the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, which has raised over $170 million for UNICEF. In 2021, UNICEF USA partner Zakat Foundation of America, a Muslim-run faith-based organization, donated $200,000 to provide blankets, heavy-duty tarps, drinking water, clothing, and sanitation supplies for 10,000 families (including 37,000 children) in Afghanistan. President and CEO Michael J. Nyenhuis was appointed to lead UNICEF USA following the departure of Caryl Stern in January 2020. Nyenhuis was previously President and CEO of Americares.
