Clean, sanitary water is vital to the daily health needs of communities worldwide. With reliable access to clean water, children stay hydrated, homes stay clean and stability in situations which would otherwise be chaotic gives a sense of security.

But just how many people in the world actually have this access? And what are some things we can do to help those who don’t? Read to learn more.

Global Clean Water Availability

Currently, clean water access is a multifaceted, global challenge which involves availability, cleanliness, time, healthcare and even gender issues:

  • As of 2024, 2.2 billion still lacked access to safe drinking water, and 3.4 billion lacked access to safe sanitation.

  • Since 2015, global water stress (where the demand for water outpaces population growth) has held at 18%, with 1/10 people now living in critical water stress.

  • Globally, women and girls bear the brunt of collecting water for their families and communities, spending an estimated 200 million total hours per year on this daunting task and often walking miles daily.

  • Additionally, women and girls are responsible for collecting water in 8/10 households where water access is away from their properties

  • In the US, the CDC estimates at least 1.1 million contract sicknesses from germs in drinking water

With so much time and effort being spent by families and individuals on collecting water, who already face extreme challenges to their daily living, maintaining basic sanitation and health becomes a seemingly impossible task. Clean water access must be improved in sustainable, intentional ways if the world’s population is to truly heal and thrive.

Our Clean Water Initiatives

As part of our long-held vision to provide clean water for as many people as possible, and meeting the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, our water projects continue to provide life-saving relief across the globe.

From bringing water trucks to the residents of Nioro, Mali to giving fresh water daily to Gaza’s displaced and so much more, we’re committed to being a source of needed hope in regions often rocked by instability and high summer temperatures.

We currently operate our water programs in 23 countries, and your charity can bring hand pumps, water wells and more to even the most remote areas and help people in desperate need regain their physical vitality.
