Following the devastation of Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 storm that struck Florida on September 26, 2024, Florida was pummeled again by Hurricane Milton on October 7, 2024.

Florida and North Carolina were already reeling, trying to restore basic systems of electrical power, transit, medical facilities, and debris cleanup. The second hurricane plunged an already struggling area to the point of desperation.

Between the two hurricanes, individuals lost family members, homes, workplaces, possessions, and their sense of calm and safety. The storms are estimated to have caused $50 billion in destruction (AP).

Amid the destruction, Zakat Foundation of America stepped in to help those impacted by the Florida hurricane, as well as help support hurricane relief in North Carolina. In North Carolina, our team served as a gathering point to gather and distribute hurricane donations from other local organizations, mosques, and individuals. Like other natural disasters, we do not leave after the immediate crisis but stay to help rebuild, encourage, and bring hope to those whose lives have been irrevocably changed. Our goal is to see relief and rehabilitation from the hurricanes.

Our teams both in Florida and North Carolina continue on the ground to help this area recover. Our Southern Representative, Syed Yousuf explained: “Our prayers remain with all those affected, and we stand ready to help as Florida begins its recovery from this catastrophic storm.”
