Giving zakat is a core act of worship, and this time of year it can offer real financial benefits. New federal rules for 2026 make it easier than ever for many donors to get a tax benefit. Here’s how to make the most of your gift.
Zakat Foundation of America is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit [36-4476244], so eligible gifts may be tax-deductible. You can fulfill your religious obligation while lowering your taxable income.
Under the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act, two changes affect donors:
If you take the standard deduction, you can now deduct up to $1,000 in cash gifts to qualified charities ($2,000 if married filing jointly). Before 2026, most people who didn’t itemize got no tax benefit from giving.
If you itemize, only the portion of your gifts above 0.5% of your adjusted gross income is deductible.
4 Simple Ways to Maximize Your Benefit
Give in cash. The new deduction for non-itemizers covers cash gifts only, including checks, credit cards, and online payments. Gifts to donor-advised funds don’t qualify.
Keep your receipt. Every donation to Zakat Foundation of America comes with a receipt. The IRS requires written acknowledgment for any gift of $250 or more.
Give before December 31. A gift counts for the year it’s made. Gifts made in 2026 are reported on the tax return you file in 2027. Plan ahead if you give your zakat in installments.
Consider appreciated assets if you itemize. Donating stock or other appreciated assets may let you avoid capital gains tax on the gain. This doesn’t count toward the non-itemizer deduction, so talk to a tax professional first.
Double Your Impact with Matching Gifts
Your employer may match your donation. Many companies match employee gifts dollar for dollar, which turns your zakat into twice the help for families in need.
Zakat Foundation of America also runs its own Matching Gift Program. When your gift is matched, the impact doubles for families facing hunger, displacement, and hardship.
To see if your employer offers matching, ask your Human Resources department or check your company’s giving portal. After you donate, submit the match request, which usually takes only a few minutes.
