On Monday, May 18, an 18-wheeler pulled up to House of Mercy full of 40,000 pounds of potatoes donated by the Zakat Foundation. The Zakat Foundation generously donated the entire truckload to ensure those in need in our area have some fresh produce this week. House of Mercy staff and volunteers unloaded the truck and distributed about 85% of those to about 11 neighboring food pantries, including:

  • Bethany Food Pantry at All Saints Catholic Church,

  • Grace Life Community Church Food Pantry,

  • St. Lucy Project (Catholic Charities),

  • Park Valley Church in Haymarket,

  • Holy Family Catholic Church,

  • Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center,

  • MAS DC Islamic Center,

  • Muslim Association of Virginia,

  • Moroccan American Community organization,

  • Quba Islamic Center, and

  • Ethiopian Council for peace and progress.

Jessica Root is Executive Director at House of Mercy. Root said, “We are so grateful for the Zakat Foundation for providing this food for those in need in our area. We have seen so much generosity during this time of pandemic and this is one more amazing thing happening!”
