Story update November 1, 2012

On Saturday, October 20, the Zakat Foundation of America Chicago Community Center (Zakat Foundation of AmericaCCC) organized a free Health Fair in the South Shore community.

Medical professionals were on hand discussing a wide range of health topics including cancer, diabetes, blood pressure, mental health, substance abuse, STD/HIV and AIDS.

Juancetta Smith from A Silver Lining Foundation discussed breast cancer and the importance of getting mammograms. Ngina Muhammad Rahman, a survivor of lupus, talked about living with lupus and getting diagnosed. And one of our most important discussions was with Registered Nurse, Nicole Williams, where she tackled tough topics including STD/ HIV and AIDS.

Medical students from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine joined us and led important discussions about health.

Kunmmi Sobowale, a third year medical student discussed mental health issues, particularly focusing on depression. Ndang Azan-Njaah, another third year medical student, presented and led a discussion on diabetes. Finally, Abdullah Pratt, a second year medical student talked about men's health, particularly focusing on prostate cancer.

A number of discussions focused on the roots of violence in the community. Laila Muhammad, Zakat Foundation of AmericaCCC Director, led an enlightening discussion on domestic violence followed by Ifrah Magan, a Zakat Foundation of America Representative, who led a discussion on violence around the world.

Retired Chicago Police Officer Darryl Neil and Chicago Police Officer Viveca Green discussed gang violence and personal safety in a city that is affected by gang violence on a regular basis.
Over 80 people attended the Health Fair and participants were able to receive free screenings for glucose and blood pressure.

Zakat Foundation of AmericaCCC distributed food and winter-clothes to community members in need throughout the day. Alhumdulillah, the Health Fair was a success but more importantly, it gave community members invaluable information about living long, healthy lives.
