How Zakat Foundation of America Is Transforming Lives in Bangladesh with Community Healthcare

For millions of people living in Bangladesh's urban slums, healthcare remains out of reach. While Bangladesh has made significant progress in life expectancy, child survival, and immunization, major challenges remain. According to World Bank data, out-of-pocket spending accounts for 73% of healthcare expenditures, forcing many families to choose between seeking treatment and meeting basic household needs.

For vulnerable communities in Dhaka's informal settlements, these barriers can be devastating.

That is why the Zakat Foundation of America is committed to bringing healthcare directly to those in Bangladesh, who need it most through our:

  • Mother & Child Healthcare Center

  • Community Health Camps

  • Door to Door Outreach

  • Courtyard Meetings

At our Mother & Child Healthcare Center in Dhaka, vulnerable families receive free medical consultations, diagnostic testing, and essential medicines; services that many could not otherwise afford.

The clinic provided healthcare services, patient consultations, diabetic screenings, and pregnancy tests.

Patients receive treatment for common but serious illnesses such as pneumonia, asthma, viral infections, skin diseases, and gastrointestinal conditions. Critical cases are referred to specialized hospitals to ensure continuity of care.

Access to healthcare remains one of the greatest challenges for slum residents, particularly elderly individuals and families living far from medical facilities.

To address this gap, we conduct Community Health Camps throughout the year, bringing free medical consultations and medicines directly into underserved neighborhoods. These camps reach communities who may otherwise have gone without care.

At the same time, our Door-to-Door Health Outreach Program visits households to provide health counseling, maternal health support, nutrition education, hygiene awareness, and medical referrals.

By meeting families where they live, healthcare becomes accessible, trusted, and preventative, not just reactive.

Healthcare is about more than treatment. It is also about prevention.

Through Community Courtyard Meetings, we provide health and hygiene education on topics including child immunization, reproductive health, safe drinking water, personal hygiene, COVID-19 prevention, and child education.

These sessions help families make informed decisions that improve long-term health outcomes and strengthen community resilience.

Vaccination remains one of the most effective public health interventions available. Working alongside the Government of Bangladesh through the Expanded Program on Immunization, our Mother & Child Healthcare Center provides free immunizations against tuberculosis, polio, measles, and hepatitis B.

Behind every statistic is a mother receiving prenatal care, a child protected from preventable disease, or a family gaining the knowledge needed to build a healthier future.

With your support, we are helping ensure that vulnerable families across Bangladesh have access to the care, dignity, and opportunity they deserve.
