Stories From the Field

Khuteja Bi
Karnataka, India
For Khuteja Bi, Eid-al-Adha was unforgettable. Living in a modest rented home with her husband, son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren, celebrations had long been out of reach due to financial hardship. Her husband, once a factory worker, can no longer work regularly due to illness, and the family survives on her son's limited income. But on Eid morning, Zakat Foundation of America volunteers arrived with a meat pack. With tears in her eyes, Khuteja cooked mutton biryani, her grandchildren’s favorite, for the first time in years. That simple gift turned their Eid into a day of joy, dignity, and heartfelt gratitude.

Mariuxi Florez
Medellín, Colombia
Mariuxi Florez, an immigrant from Ecuador, now lives in Colombia with her three grandchildren. Fleeing gun violence in their hometown, Mariuxi became their sole caregiver after her daughter, struggling with trauma and addiction, became homeless. The children aren’t in school and walk an hour daily to help sell candies on a street corner. Together, they try to earn around $12 each day to afford a single rented room and some food. Meat has become a distant memory for them. Your Udhiyah-Qurbani share was a welcomed relief for Mariuxi’s family, who can now enjoy a nourishing meal.
