Response to Humanitarian Crisis

Iraq continues to face a protracted humanitarian situation, with ongoing needs arising from internal displacement, returnees, and socio-economic vulnerabilities. Over 1 million internally displaced persons remain, many in camps or informal urban settings, while hundreds of thousands of refugees, mostly Syrians, are hosted in the Kurdistan Region. Vulnerable populations face challenges of accessing food, clean water, livelihoods, and basic services, though the country is increasingly stable and development-focused. Since 2003, the Zakat Foundation of America has supported Iraq’s most vulnerable through food, medicine, winter relief, and other urgent assistance. Seasonal Islamic Giving programs provide vital nutrition, with iftar meals distributed during Ramadan and fresh Udhiyah-Qurbani meat offered to families in need, helping communities maintain food security and resilience amid ongoing displacement and economic challenges.
