Thanks to the grace of God and our generous and kindhearted donors, Zakat Foundation of America is overjoyed to announce the completion of a new mosque for the villagers of Malakisi in Western Kenya.

Malakisi is a Muslim village where most people live on less than a dollar a day. Their village mosque, built in 1972, was too run-down to serve them. In addition to a leaky roof and crumbling walls it could not accommodate the 700 to 800 people who regularly attended Friday prayers. As a result, many prayed outside in the harsh sun. The community did not have the resources to rebuild the mosque so they appealed to Zakat Foundation of America for assistance.

At the beginning of this year, Zakat Foundation of America began constructing a new mosque for the villagers. The new structure has an area for wudu (ablution), minarets atop the building, and a sound system to announce the adhan (call for prayer) to the community. The women and children of Malakisi are now able to use the water supplying the mosque and are grateful for Zakat Foundation of America's work.

The entire community was excited about the mosque completion. At the ceremony to celebrate, the Mayor of Webuye spoke about this new development. Community leaders believe the mosque will ignite more development in the region.

Now that the new mosque is completed, the community will be able to pray together more comfortably for many years to come.

The Malakisi Mosque exemplifies Sadaqah Jariyah, or perpetual charity. Its benefits will extend beyond the lifetime of the people who perform it. Zakat Foundation of America is dedicated to providing Sadaqah Jariyah in impoverished nations around the world.
