With nearly 600,000 migrants escaping the turmoil in Sudan, Chad now stands as the largest home of Sudanese refugees, joining over half a million who fled during the Darfur conflict in 2003–2004. Nearly 6.8 million people have left Sudan since April 2023 as fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces continues to force millions of people to flee. With over 1.3 million internally displaced people (IDPs), refugees, and returnees living in Chad, there is an urgent need for both short-term assistance and long-term solutions.
At the Adré Refugee Camp, located near Darfur, Sudan on the Chad border, Zakat Foundation of America is set to provide critical healthcare services at our Health Clinic Tent, including medical treatment and medication for these refugees. The refugee camp faces severe health challenges due to the massive refugee influx. While the camp has an existing health clinic, it remains critically under-resourced. The current clinic is unequipped to handle the daily patient load with insufficient medicine stock, a shortage of medical staff, and equipment for urgent cases.
By delivering timely and effective healthcare, we are setting out to improve health outcomes, reducing preventable suffering, and strengthening the resilience of these displaced people. On average, 1,100 refugee patients are treated monthly at our clinic. We ensure increased access to medical care with round-the-clock availability for emergency cases.
This Health Clinic Tent aligns with our commitment to refugee protection, their right to healthcare, and our broader objective for social stability and human dignity. We provide medical services, established a system for inventory and distribution of medicine, record patient information into a registration system, and logistic support to procure medicine and transport staff. Moreover, the goal is to partner with local hospitals and specialized care providers to ensure refugees with severe conditions receive timely referrals.
Since 2007, Zakat Foundation of America has been working in Sudan addressing food insecurity through seasonal giving food packages, medical needs with cataract surgeries, Covid-19 relief, professional development, and sadaqah jariyah through water wells. Supporting health care initiatives such as this clinic will ensure families remain safe, secure, and hopeful.
