Over the weekend of Saturday, August 16th, Zakat Foundation of America reached out to two of Baltimore’s most underserved communities with vital support as families prepared for the new school year.

First Stop: Serving Afghan Refugee Families

Our first stop was with recently resettled refugee families from Afghanistan. For many of these families, starting over in a new country comes with tremendous challenges, especially when it comes to providing for their children’s education. We were humbled to see the gratitude of parents and the excitement of children as they received brand-new backpacks filled with school supplies.

Second Stop: Providing Backpacks for Children and Hygiene Kits for Adults

We then continued our efforts in another part of Baltimore, serving a deeply underserved community which faces tremendous, daily struggles of poverty and a lack of educational resources. Over 120 children received backpacks and school essentials—tools that will help them enter the classroom with confidence and hope.
Recognizing that dignity extends beyond school readiness, we also distributed over 150 hygiene kits to adults. Many recipients were from homeless and struggling communities who face significant barriers to maintaining basic health and wellness. These hygiene kits included essential products that provide not only physical relief but also a sense of dignity and care.

A Community Effort for Hope and Dignity

What made this initiative truly special was the way it connected people—families, children, and adults—across different communities who share the same need for compassion and support. Each smile, each “thank you,” and each spark of joy reminded us of why this work is so important.

At Zakat Foundation of America, we believe that every child deserves the chance to learn with dignity and every adult deserves the essentials to live with health and hope. Together, with your continued support, we can make these moments possible for many more families.
