Country Representative, Ghana
Salia Alhassan
Salia Alhassan serves as the Zakat Foundation of America’s Country Representative in Ghana, a role he has held since 2002. Born in Kumasi, Ghana, Salia was awarded a prestigious Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Scholarship in 1988, enabling him to study Pharmacy (Eczacilik) at Istanbul University in Turkey. He graduated in 1993 and returned to Ghana, where he began his professional career at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, eventually becoming the Coordinator of the Infectious Disease Unit.
Driven by a deep passion for serving vulnerable populations, particularly Tuberculosis (TB) patients, Salia’s humanitarian work naturally aligned with the mission of Zakat Foundation of America. Since joining the organization, he has played a key role in expanding its presence and impact across West Africa.
In 2013, he led a Zakat Foundation of America team to deliver critical relief supplies to Malian refugees in Burkina Faso and Ivorian refugees in Ghana. His leadership and dedication have extended the Zakat Foundation of America’s reach into five countries in the region: Ghana, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Togo, and Benin.
Salia is also a Patron of the Muslim Health Workers Association of Ghana and continues to advocate for accessible healthcare in underserved communities. He is fluent in English, French, and five Ghanaian languages, allowing him to connect with diverse communities across the region.
