Zakat Foundation in Libya

Libya is an oil-rich but single-resource country that has long been the target of sanctions while its people suffered mass poverty. In 2011, the Libyan government violently suppressed the popular uprising inspired by the anti-authoritarian protests sweeping the Arab world, resulting in a humanitarian crisis.

Since then political sovereignty has remained contested in Libya, with different social groups forming rival governments and parliamentary bodies. As a result of governmental instability many non-Libyans and Libyans alike have experienced displacement, inflation of food and water costs, lack of medical assistance and armed conflict. Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected by their current crisis as they flee to surrounding countries.

Zakat Foundation has focused on providing emergency supplies and basic necessities for refugees and displaced people in and around Libya, including food and water aid, bedding, medicine and medical treatment, and has also provided air and ground transportation to help internally displaced people return to their homes.
