Zakat Foundation in Azad Kashmir
Chronic instability affects the Kashmir region, which lies between India, Pakistan, and China, and has been disputed by the neighboring powers for over a century. Its status as a contested territory leads to conflict that disrupts the day-to-day lives of its people and has serious effects on access to critical resources.
Approximately 11 million people live in Kashmir, but its health and educational facilities are inadequate to meet the needs of the population. Most of the people depend upon forestry, livestock, and agriculture for a meager subsistence as geopolitical conflict hinders longer-term economic and human development.
Zakat Foundation of America helps the people of the Kashmir region through the provision of emergency supplies following natural disasters, through the distribution of winter supplies for vulnerable families during the cold months, and by sponsoring the development of new schools to increase access to educational opportunities.
