Community Partners Come Together to Fight Childhood Hunger

Zakat Foundation of America and Feed the Children to Feed Washington D.C. Families

PRESS RELEASE

WASHINGTON D.C. (June 4, 2018) – Zakat Foundation of America will be joining forces with Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy and world anti-hunger organization Feed the Children to fight child hunger in the Washington D.C. community. The community partners will come together to provide food and essentials to 400 families, pre-identified based on need by Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. The families will gather at Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy (3675 Ely Place SE), Mon., June 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Each participating family will receive a 25-pound box of food such as canned vegetables, peanut butter and mac ‘n cheese; a 15-pound box of essentials like personal-care items such as shampoo, razors and toothpaste; and a box of Avon products. The provided food and essentials will help families in need of basic materials most people take for granted.

“We have been supporting food-insecure Americans since our founding in 2001,” said Halil Demir, Zakat Foundation executive director and founder. “We are proud to partner with Feed the Children to ensure that children in our community get the food and essentials needed for their well-being and success.”

This is one of many events Feed the Children has planned across the country to help defeat hunger. In Washington D.C. alone, more than 18 percent of families live below the poverty line. With the help of community partners and volunteers, we can help feed those in need.

“We believe that no child should go to bed hungry in a land where there is plenty of food,” said Travis Arnold, Feed the Children president and CEO. “But the reality is, millions of boys and girls, right here in our own backyard, face this hardship every day. Thanks to our generous partners, Zakat Foundation of America and Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, today we are able to help these families rest a little easier knowing they do not have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.”
