Volunteer Days

Strengthening Our Faith Through Charity; Binding Faith and Service

CHICAGO, August 24, 2017 -- Zakat Foundation of America will kick off a new monthly series, “Volunteer Days,” at the Zakat Foundation of America Unity Center on Sunday, August 27, from noon to 3 p.m.

Volunteer Days will give community members of all ages the opportunity to package care kits and wrap holiday gifts for various groups of people experiencing hardships and vulnerability. There are nearly 15 million children in the United States whose families’ earnings are below the federal poverty threshold.

“We created this event to encourage families and teens, people young and old to empathize with those who are less advantaged than them,” said Amal Ali, Zakat Foundation of America Outreach Manager, when asked what inspired this event. Ms. Amal will also give a spiritual talk following the care kit assembly.

Gift and care kit recipients include homeless, low-income families, cancer and long-term hospital patients, elderly/seniors, and refugees resettling in Chicago. A stationery for volunteers to personalize each care kit with notes and drawings will also be available.

“We have nearly a thousand backpacks to package and distribute, so we figured why not engage the community in packaging them with us and give them the opportunity to participate in serving?” Ali said.

The series, which will continue through 2017, was organized to create awareness about the many hardships people from our communities are experiencing throughout the year.
