Zakat Foundation of America

Deploys Disaster Relief for Hurricane Harvey Victims

CHICAGO, AUGUST 28, 2017 -- In the past 15 years, Zakat Foundation of America has responded to almost all major international and domestic disasters.

Zakat Foundation of America has assembled a team of volunteers to assist with the catastrophic damage that has come from Hurricane Harvey. The Category 4 hurricane has killed at least 8 people and has injured dozens more with its tornados and 130 mph winds. Zakat Foundation of America volunteers and team members are assessing the damages and preparing to assist when the conditions are safe enough to do so.

Zakat Foundation of America is working collectively with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) and other relief organizations to bring aid to community members experiencing the disastrous effects of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Zakat Foundation of America has also partnered with the Islamic Society of Greater Houston.

“At this point, the streets are too flooded for us to pass out aid, but we are preparing the food trucks and we will deploy once the flooding descends,” said Zakat Foundation of America East Coast Programs Director, Murat Kose.

Zakat Foundation of America will be distributing necessary items such as hygiene kits, water, cleaning products, warm food, baby/infant formula and translation services where needed. Zakat Foundation of America will also be educating people about applying for FEMA assistance and assessing damage once the flooding subsides.
