Striving for the Greater Good

Volunteer service is a cornerstone of Zakat Foundation of America’s humanitarian mission. Zakat Foundation of America is blessed to have a passionate team of volunteers who are consistently active in their respective communities.

Recently, the State of Delaware awarded the excellent service of Zakat Foundation of America’s volunteers at the 33rd Annual Governor's Outstanding Volunteers ceremony. Six of the Zakat Foundation of America Youth Mentors being recognized have collectively contributed more than 4,000 hours in the past three years in tutoring and mentoring services.

“The Zakat Foundation of America Youth Mentors are an outstanding team of dedicated individuals ready to make Delaware a better place,” commented Gov. Jack Markell’s office.

In addition to providing academic support, Zakat Foundation of America Youth Mentors have also been involved in organizing various workshops, supervising community service youth groups, and teaching computer classes.

The recipient of the social service award was Irfan Patel who was recognized for his efforts in social justice advocacy. Mr. Patel has dedicated more than 300 hours working with various organizations and campaigns supporting children with medical issues. His outreach work has left an impact not only in Delaware but across the Northeast United States.

Mr. Patel has been an important community figure in raising awareness of challenges facing families raising children with medical issues. As a parent of two special needs children, he understands the importance of bringing these issues to the forefront of community activism. His efforts have encouraged many interfaith-based initiatives to also focus on the requirements of special needs children.

Zakat Foundation of America volunteers received awards in in two categories: education and social service. The Governor’s Volunteer Awards also recognizes community service in the fields of arts and culture, environment, health, and public safety.
