Earlier this month, Uganda suffered a massive landslide attributed to flooding over the last few months, causing destruction and damage in the country.
The landslide struck Bumwalukani, in Eastern Uganda. 18 people have been confirmed dead, over 100 people were found buried in the mud and over 1,000 people were forced to flee as the tragedy unfolded with thousands more affected.
Zakat Foundation of America has dispatched a team to provide immediate and long-term relief to the Ugandan people. So far, we have been able to provide packages to over 500 families, filled with food and non-food Items.
A Zakat Foundation of America representative in the region retells his experience with landslide victims: "We were so touched by what we saw and the interviews we did. We met people who have lost their children, husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, livestock and houses. It was so touching."
The landslide has left thousands of Ugandan people in need of shelter and medical aid. Moreover, the landslides have caused massive destruction to food crops that were ready for harvest. Uganda relies heavily on agriculture which makes the situation dire, especially with the threat of drought season quickly approaching.
