It all started with a dream. In 2013, a student activist group based out of Delaware mobilized to spread awareness about orphans around the world. The youth-led movement became determined to meet their goal of sponsoring 99 orphans. And they succeeded - ‘99 Orphans Project’ Accomplish their Goal.
Since then, the 99 Orphans Project consistently achieves this goal. Every year, the organization challenges itself to fundraise enough money to sponsor nearly 100 orphans. The proceeds go to Zakat Foundation of America, whose Orphan Sponsorship Program (OSP) provides food, shelter, education, healthcare and more to helpless children globally.
Most recently, the Long Island Muslim Society (LIMS) sisters organized bake sales to sponsor 10 orphans. In North Carolina, mothers and daughters joined together for a tea party-themed event, raising enough money to sponsor 15 orphans.
The 99 Orphans Project has also received recognition from the governor of Delaware, the mayor of Wilmington (Delaware), and the Jefferson Awards Foundation, a prestigious national organization honoring community and public volunteerism in America.
“The 99 Orphans team is not only helping children around the world, but also its members by training them with a variety of real-life skills, like public speaking, event organizing, and writing at an early age,” says Murat Kose, Zakat Foundation of America’s East Coast Programs Director. “Most importantly, they are learning the importance of voluntarism and helping those in need.”
