USA
The number of people living in poverty in the United States is unacceptably high. 43.6 million people, or approximately 14% of the total population of the country live below the poverty line. Higher than usual unemployment, underemployment and growing wage inequality continue to plague the country. Many families that make up the working poor, technically living above the poverty line, and yet struggle to make ends meet, and to afford adequate food, education or health care benefits for their families.
In addition to neglected urban areas, there are other forgotten pockets of America where poverty flourishes. Regionally, the South is the poorest area in the United States. Appalachia and the states of Arkansas and Mississippi have poverty rates higher than the national average. The remotely located reservations of Native Americans severly stifle the economic viability of those communities and their access to quality basic services.
