Macedonia
Macedonia is the poorest of the former Yugoslav Republics, with one fifth of its population living in destitute poverty, unable to meet their basic needs. Many of the poor include unemployed adults and vulnerable children.
Insufficient investments in education have produced a situation where only 33% of children in Macedonia attend high school. It is estimated that one third of all youth in Macedonia, between the ages of 15 and 19, are completely excluded from education and prospects for viable employment.
Modest economic growth in the past few years has not brought equally improved living standards for the entire population and Muslim Macedonians, who make up thirty percent of the population, and also suffer under the poor living conditions that affects the country.
