Ivory Coast
Political turmoil, including a civil war that erupted in 2002 and the violent conflicts following the elections of 2011 have continued to damage the Ivory Coast’s economy, increasing poverty rates in the country significantly.
The Ivory Coast is rich in natural resources such as coffee and cocoa, but the people’s dependency on exportation makes them especially vulnerable to the fluctuation in market prices for those goods on the world market.
As a result of increasing poverty, poor Ivoirians face enormous difficulties in accessing basic social services such as education and health care. Health care is crucial to well-being in a country with one of the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates in West Africa. But as one of the 20 poorest countries in the world, the Ivory Coast faces serious obstacles to addressing the multitude of needs of its people.
