Horn of Africa’s Will to Survive

The worst drought in 60 years is affecting 12 million lives in the Horn of Africa. The United Nations believes that it might lead to a "human tragedy of unimaginable proportions.” The lack of rain for two consecutive seasons and rising food prices is a deadly combination.

Families from Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia have been devastated and are fighting against malnutrition at an alarming rate.

Crisis overview:

• 12,000,000 Somalis, Kenyans and Ethiopians are starving due to worse drought since 1950’s
• 60% of livestock (means of wealth) has perished in some areas
• Young children are dying on their way to or within a day of arrival at refugee camps to Kenya and Ethiopia
• 1000’s of Somalis are seeking refuge in abandoned UN buildings in Mogadishu 
• Approximately 1,000-1,400 Somalia refugees are crossing borders to Kenya everyday
• Local food prices increased to 240%.

Zakat Foundation of America has launched a campaign, Horn of Africa Famine Aid Program, for this atrocious famine. We have been distributing emergency aid and food in Ethiopia and Somalia since 2006. Since then, ZF has:

• Dug six wells in Somalia
• Built a school in Ethiopia
• Built and established two mosques in Ethiopia and Somalia, respectively.
