Zakat aid distribution to young children affected by 2008 Pakistani earthquake
A strong earthquake of a 6.4 magnitude struck villages in the Baluchistan province in southwestern Pakistan before dawn Wednesday October 29, 2008, killing hundreds, injuring thousands, and destroying 2,000 homes leaving 15,000 homeless.
In total, 40,000 survivors were displaced due to the already high number of refugees and survivors of the 2005 earthquake. A series of more than 250 aftershocks has been reported; causing panic amongst the survivors.
In order to coordinate and start rescue-relief efforts, the Zakat Foundation and its local partner have set up a field office in the city of Quetta, the epicenter of the earthquake. We have established a tent village, “Khuda Ki Basti” at Kech/Turbat in the Baluchistan province. The logistical nature proves to be a huge challenge due to the string of aftershocks, bitter cold and poor road conditions. Zakat Foundation continues to deliver aid to those families left homeless by the earthquake.
