Thousands of people in Niger face famine as a part of daily life; 80 new children are threatened with death from malnutrition on a daily basis.

In the summer of 2005 the existing hunger crisis became aggravated and intensified because of a massive shift in climate. Food stores became depleted and replenishment was slow in coming. Those affected, desperately starving, took to foraging for tree leaves, roots, and even the flesh from dying livestock.

Zakat Foundation was one of few international relief organizations to work hard in Niger for the change in the lives of people there. When the hunger crisis exploded into a full-scale devastation, Dr Muhammad Abdo arrived on the scene to coordinate our operations with local organizations to locate those regions where the foundations work would have the most impact. The population has been afflicted by drought and locust infestation over the prior couple of years; culminating in this devastating famine which began to manifest itself in May of 2005.

Zakat Foundation's Niger Famine Relief Work: an Update

Zakat Foundation continues to support food distribution in the areas hit by famine in Niger, West Africa. In coordination with its local partner, the distribution of dry rations, which includes millet, rice, beans and oil, are being delivered to six schools in areas in the Iferouane and Gougaram locales of the Agadez region. continue reading »
