By the grace of God, construction is under way in Malakisi, Kenya, where Zakat Foundation of America (ZF) has torn down the town’s old dilapidated mosque and is now building a new one. The old mosque was falling apart and could not accommodate the 700-800 people who attend Friday prayers there.

Construction for the new mosque began on January 10, 2012 and is expected to be completed by June 1, 2012.

According to ZF staff in Kenya, the entire community, including government leaders, is excited about the construction. They believe the mosque will ignite other developments in the area. The Malakisi people are still in disbelief because they have been waiting for more than 21 years for a new mosque in their community.

The women of Malakisi as well as the children of Malakisi Muslim Primary School children are able to use the water supplying the mosque and are grateful for the work that ZF is doing.

The Malakisi community appealed to ZF earlier this month to rebuild the local mosque. Thanks to our generous and kindhearted donors, ZF responded positively to the request.

The new mosque will have an area for wudu/ablution, minarets atop the building, and a sound system to announce the Adhan (call for prayer) to the community.
