The unfortunate truth about the situation in Haiti is that post-earthquake progress has been so stagnant at times as to seem imperceptible. More than seven months have passed since the devastating earthquake of January 2010 and yet food, shelter, healthcare, and increasingly personal safety continue to loom over the lives of hundreds of thousands of Haitians.

Zakat Foundation is one of the organizations that has stayed in Haiti after the initial crisis period following the earthquake. This is because ZF began helping Haiti’s poor in 2008 and is committed to helping Haitians make a better future for themselves insha’Allah.

Because access to adequate food and water is a continuing and persistent problem in Haiti, Zakat Foundation has continued to support the distribution of food to needy children in Port au Prince while also supporting Haitian farmers.

Zakat Foundation’s overall goal is to improve the quality of life for the Haitian people in general. This includes the upcoming opening of a sewing center in one of the camps for internally displaced persons that can be found throughout Port au Prince. The classes will allow women in the camps to acquire a skill which could be used later for financial self-sufficiency while also offering them a distraction from the daily drudgery of camp life.

Along with other projects and programs, Zakat Foundation is also helping Haitian orphaned children through sponsorship which will allow them to lead lives of dignity; eating regularly, and attending school as all children should be able to do.

Zakat Foundation has long terms goals for its work in Haiti that insha’Allah can be achieved with the strong support of our donors. Haiti is listed as the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, but its present situation does not have to be its final destiny.

Although media attention has faded, the reality of life for most Haitians with its misery and trials continues. We ask you to please help us to assist the people of Haiti because the calamity has yet to end.
