Jerome McDonnel from Worldview interviews Halil Demir About Pakistan Flood

On August 18, 2010 Halil Demir, Executive Director of the Zakat Foundation of America (ZF), spoke with Jerome McDonnell, host of Chicago Public Radio’s global affairs program Worldview about ZF’s relief efforts to Pakistan flood victims.

The flood in Pakistan has affected 20 million people. Of those 20 million affected almost 70% have NOT yet received aid. Floods create a very unique disaster situation as they wash everything away, from crops and animals to housing and business including cell phone towers, and even roads. This type of devastation leaves people isolated and vulnerable—vulnerable to the elements, disease washed in by and breeding in flood waters, starvation, and so much more.

Mr. Demir urges the American people to “extend our hand” to help those devastated by the flood waters as aid is slow to come from the Pakistan government. He also urges the Pakistan government and military to assist relief efforts by temporarily removing check points and lending necessary equipment to those mounting relief efforts.
