It has been almost three weeks since the flood destroyed many lives and more than a week into the blessed month of Ramadan, our representatives are still witnessing many heartbreaking stories in Pakistan. There are severe shortages of food, tent, clean water and hygiene sets. Millions of survivors are desperate as relief efforts are continuing at a slow pace. There is a huge concern of fatal water-borne diseases such as cholera and dysentery affecting children and elderly.
The crisis has killed at least 1,600 people and affected nearly 30 million people across Pakistan, according to government's estimations. 6 million people estimated needing food aid over 700,000 homes damaged or destroyed.
According to World Health Organization (WHO), up to 1.5 million cases of diarrheal diseases – including up to 140,000 cases of cholera, 150,000 cases of measles, 350,000 cases of acute respiratory infections, and up to 100,000 cases of malaria – could occur over the next three months.
Zakat Foundation team member who just returned from Pakistan states, "Everywhere is full of human beings: schools, boarding houses, colleges, and mosques; People try to take shelter where ever they can find space. It is really a desperate situation. It is nothing like the earthquake or war. The flood takes everything leaves nothing to survivors—most places even cell phones do not work. If more help is not brought soon we will face a disaster!"
Zakat Foundation's (ZF) representatives established 6 mobile kitchen distributing warm, cooked food & food rations. ZF has supported the establishment of a medical camp in Charasddah and temporary shelters. In addition, ZF has distributed thousands of basic essential items including:
- clothes, shawls, footwear
- hygiene sets
- cooking utensils
