Mauritania is located in the Sahel where drought is a common feature in this arid country. Mauritania is largely agrarian, severely impacting the population when drought hits. Food insecurity, heightened food prices, and undeveloped infrastructure has played major role in the massive poverty circulating throughout the country. Albeit, there has been some economic growth with the help of the international community. However, the growth is slow and often limited to urban areas.

If droughts continue to plague this country, UNICEF reports that over 90,000 children could suffer acute malnutrition, a deadly illness. Following the political crises in the Sahel, thousands of refugees migrate to Mauritania to avoid persecution. The Mauritanian government and local and international NGOs have financial and material constraints to assist in this growing dilemma while serving the Mauritanian people.
