Central African Republic

Zakat Foundation of America

Landlocked near the precise center of the African continent, Central African Republic (CAR) gained independence from French rule in 1960. After decades of neglect, mostly by military governments, civilian rule was established in 1993, but after only a decade a military coup destabilized the country again. The military government established by coup never fully controlled the outlying areas of the country, and ended when rebel groups seized the capital in 2013.

Although the rebel groups are not specifically advocating for religious law, they are often identified as Muslim or Christian, and violence between religious groups has escalated to terrifying levels as factions attempt to seize control of financial or natural resources.

Sectarian fighting between the government and rebel groups has impeded economic growth and development in this largely rural country whose economy depends primarily on subsistence agriculture, forestry and mining.
